"I raised you to need me less, so you could become more.” Those words have lived in my heart for years, but this summer, they feel especially true. Mason has been on the college track since his first campus tour in 10th grade, and after completing his summer program, there was no doubt where he’d land. We gave him the freedom to choose his own path, but he made it clear—there was no Plan B. I respected that because I move the same way. Last night, we had our “finale” mommy-and-son date—not the last ever, but the last before this big shift. Sitting across from my firstborn, I felt a swell of emotion and pride. The seeds planted with Team No Coddle have taken root, and now I’m watching the harvest in real time. This summer feels like a gentle goodbye to the bond as it’s been, and a joyful welcome to the next chapter.

When I asked what lesson he’s most grateful I taught him early, Mason didn’t hesitate: “Self-sufficiency—and how to wash clothes.” I smiled with relief, knowing the chores, life skills, and tough love I insisted on have paid off. We’ve built a bond that doesn’t cling; four weeks apart this summer proved that. Everything after tomorrow is on him, and he’s ready—with a strong foundation, a healthy community, and the awareness that he represents me while owning his life. As much as these are happy tears for him, they’re also for me. I’m stepping into my own next chapter—an upgraded, empty-nest version of myself. I want to say a huge THANK YOU to my tribe, my community, my family, my anyone who's had a hand in the village. This isn't a standalone job by no means and I'm forever grateful.

Here’s to the next season—his, mine, and the beautiful evolution of “us.” The cord is cut, the love is infinite, and the best part? We’re both ready. I raised him to need me less, and now I get to watch him become more.
